National Soccer League (NSL) was the premier professional soccer league in Australia from 1977 to 2004. In 1985, the league featured 14 teams - Adelaide City, Brisbane Lions, Footscray JUST, Heidelberg United, Marconi Fairfield, Melbourne Croatia, Newcastle KB United, Preston Lions, South Melbourne, St George, Sydney City, Sydney Olympic, West Adelaide and Wollongong City.
South Melbourne won the 1985 NSL championship, defeating Brunswick Juventus in the Grand Final. The league also featured some notable players such as Graham Arnold, Frank Farina, and Mark Viduka.
During this period, the NSL struggled to gain mainstream popularity and media coverage in Australia. However, it laid the foundation for the current A-League, which began in 2005.
